Why we feature this artist

The wide space around a broken rhythm

Deepsky’s music often finds its character between the beat and the atmosphere. The rhythm can be busy, but the melodic material unfolds at a different pace, giving the track a sense of depth rather than constant urgency. The strongest records hold those two speeds together.

The early American productions

Jason Blum and J. Scott G. developed Deepsky in the 1990s, moving from an Albuquerque beginning into a wider American electronic scene. Records including “Stargazer” gave the project a recognisable melodic identity, with long arrangements designed to work inside a complete DJ sequence.

In Silico in 2002 brought that sound into an artist album. Progressive house, trance and broken rhythms share the same setting, with the production making room for both a strongly defined groove and longer, more atmospheric passages.

A voice inside the landscape

Later records and remix work extended the palette. “Ghost”, featuring JES, is a useful example of how a full vocal performance can change the emotional centre of a spacious electronic track. The different mixes reveal different rhythmic possibilities without erasing the song.

The album and extended recordings are the best route in. Deepsky’s music often needs a little time to establish its proportions: the drums create movement, the harmony creates distance and a vocal or melodic figure gradually gives the landscape a point of view. The detail is clearest when the arrangement is allowed to finish its thought.
