Energy 52
Energy 52 distilled the early-1990s German trance aesthetic into one enduring club record: “Café Del Mar”, a melodic, spacious anthem whose remixes helped carry its central theme across generations of dance music.
A short-lived project with a very long afterlife
Energy 52 existed briefly, but its signature recording became a defining reference point for trance.
Energy 52 emerged in Germany in 1991 as a collaboration between DJs and producers Kid Paul and Cosmic Baby. MusicBrainz identifies the project as a group founded in 1991 and dissolved in 1993, while Spotify describes Paul Schmitz-Moorman as the project's driving figure and Harald Blüchel as a key collaborator.
The project's early catalogue included “State Of Mind” and “Expression / Eternity / The Bassline”. These releases established the project before its breakthrough, but the track that would define Energy 52 was “Café Del Mar”, released in May 1993 on Eye Q Records in Germany.
Named for the famous Ibiza venue, “Café Del Mar” became closely associated with the emotional, melodic side of trance and with the wider mythology of Ibiza club culture. Its success was sustained not by a conventional album campaign, but by an unusually large ecosystem of remixes, reissues and compilations.
The recording's authorship is credited to Cosmic Baby and Paul Schmitz-Moormann. Later versions brought in remixers including Three ’N One, Nalin & Kane, Oliver Lieb and Paul van Dyk, giving the same composition different lives across successive eras of electronic dance music.
Energy 52's original lifespan was short, yet the catalogue continued to circulate for decades. The 2024 “30 Years Anniversary” release gathered ten versions, including remasters and new remixes by artists such as Orbital, Michael Mayer, Tale Of Us and Paul van Dyk.

One melody, decades of trance memory
Energy 52's importance rests less on the size of its original catalogue than on the durability of “Café Del Mar”. MusicBrainz records dozens of official versions of the release, while Spotify continues to present the track through anniversary editions and a deep catalogue of remixes.
The project therefore occupies a distinctive place in trance history: a short-lived German collaboration whose signature composition became a reusable musical language for DJs, remixers and listeners long after the original project ended.
