Why we feature this artist
Ivano Bellini’s musical identity is closely tied to the extended club set. In that setting, a record has to do more than deliver one immediate reaction: it needs to sustain a room, alter its mood and leave the next selection somewhere useful to begin. His history around Miami’s afterhours scene gives that patient way of thinking a clear home.
Born in Lausanne, Bellini began working as a professional DJ in the 1980s before establishing himself in Miami. His artist biography traces a sequence of South Beach residencies and, later, the Sunrise Sessions on the terrace at Club Space. These are important parts of the story because a residency asks a DJ to build a relationship with a room over time.
Bellini also helped establish SFP, Sounds For People Records, with Pierre Zonzon and Marc Sacheli in the 1990s. The label work connected the role of selector with the practical work of finding and releasing music. A track could be heard in the club before it acquired a wider life on record.
The Gryphon Sessions, released in 2006, offers a named compilation entry into that history. The catalogue’s Global DJ Broadcast appearances from 2002 belong to another part of the same listening picture: the guest mix as a record of how a DJ thinks through a sequence, rather than a substitute for an artist album.
Bellini’s story makes the most sense with that distinction kept clear. Productions, label releases and compilations all matter, but the resident DJ’s craft is in the connections. A shift in percussion, the length of a blend or a less obvious record at the right hour can change the meaning of an entire passage. The sunrise setting gives those decisions a different scale of time, allowing a groove to settle before asking it to become something else.
