That Kid Chris: Chris Staropoli’s club vocabulary
That Kid Chris is one of producer and DJ Chris Staropoli’s recording names. The early-2000s broadcast-set credit offers a route into his DJ work, but the production history reaches further back: by the mid-1990s he was already discussing different musical identities and releases with the dance-music press.
Several names, one producer
In a 1996 Billboard interview, Staropoli explained the freedom of working under different names rather than making every new record fulfil the same expectation. The contemporary account discussed The Power of the Dark Side for Strictly Rhythm alongside a more techno-oriented Chaos Theory release.
His later artist biography lists names including TKC, Hyperdrive, Be Fly and Electric Mood. The point is a varied production history, not a collection of unrelated people. Each credit provides another setting for a particular musical approach.
The DJ recordings
Staropoli’s own podcast archive documents another side of that work. It includes studio mixes and recordings from after-hours settings, including a 2011 appearance at Stereo in Montreal and a 2012 set at Covert in New York.
Those programmes make useful companions to the individual productions. A single concentrates an idea; a longer DJ recording shows how that idea might sit among records with different textures and rhythmic weight.
For an introduction through an archived set, follow the changes in percussion and intensity as much as the best-known titles. The broader recording catalogue then supplies the producer’s side of the story, with the That Kid Chris name connecting both activities.
