Jakatta gave Dave Lee a vehicle for music that could retain the pulse of the dancefloor while moving into more spacious, reflective territory.
Dave Lee has recorded under numerous identities, but Jakatta occupies a particularly recognisable corner of his catalogue. Rather than concentrating solely on peak-time disco-house energy, the project draws together deep house, soul, downtempo electronics and a strong cinematic sensibility.
The breakthrough was “American Dream”. Built around material associated with Thomas Newman’s score for American Beauty, the record turned orchestral melancholy into an elegant house track. Its crossover success was substantial: the single reached number three on the UK Official Singles Chart in 2001.
