The story of Abel
Why we feature this artist
An ordinary journey becomes a very particular Dutch song
Abel’s Onderweg makes emotional distance feel tangible through a direct Dutch lyric and Joris Rasenberg’s restrained singing. The arrangement gives the story enough room to unfold before the refrain asks for a larger response.
De Stilte Voorbij gives the song its first home
The Breda band broke through in 2000, with Onderweg becoming the central introduction to the debut album De Stilte Voorbij. Neem Me Mee and 3 Dagen Zon provide other routes into the same record, revealing a band interested in melody and a narrative voice that can remain approachable.
The Dutch language is important to that intimacy. A phrase can sound like something someone might actually say, while the guitar and keyboard parts give the ordinary situation a slightly wider emotional frame. The lead does not have to become theatrical for the arrangement to carry the listener towards the next line.
The later chapters keep the songwriter’s attention on small moments
Doen of Laten followed in 2002, with Wals giving the second album another clear point of entry. After a longer interval, 12 Uur arrived in 2010. The subsequent writing and return to recording connect the public band history to Rasenberg’s continuing work behind the scenes. In his account of the later song Zie Jij Het Ook, he describes an interest in preserving meaningful human moments through music, giving a practical explanation for the close perspective of the earlier songs as well. Abel’s strongest performances make that attention audible without requiring elaborate production. An instrumental response can leave a thought suspended; a slight change in vocal pressure can make a familiar line feel less settled. Onderweg became much larger than the first room in which it was heard, but the song still depends on the modest scale of its narrator and the band’s patience around him.
