The story of Alanis Morissette
Why we feature this artist
Following the thought all the way through
Alanis Morissette’s singing can sound like a thought arriving faster than the person having it can organise it. Anger, curiosity, humour and self-questioning move through the same melodic line. Her 1990s and 2000s records helped make that complicated inner conversation part of mainstream guitar pop.
A voice with several kinds of pressure
Jagged Little Pill, released in 1995, is most rewarding when its different moods are allowed to coexist. You Oughta Know has an immediate confrontational force, while Hand in My Pocket and Head over Feet find other ways to make an ordinary phrase memorable. Ironic gives the catalogue another widely recognised entry. The songs work through the grain of the voice as much as through the subjects: a sharp consonant, a stretched line or a sudden change of intensity can redirect the whole feeling.
The album’s writing and production partnership with Glen Ballard gives that vocal personality a clear frame. Guitars, rhythms and quieter passages support the shifts in thought instead of flattening them into a single mood.
The next record refuses the obvious repeat
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie followed in 1998, moving towards longer, more exploratory writing and a broader range of textures. Thank U is the most immediate introduction, but the album’s interest lies partly in how often it lets the thought keep moving beyond an expected pop outline. Under Rug Swept in 2002 and later releases continued the personal, questioning perspective while changing the arrangements around it. The early records remain a useful companion pair. One gives an unusually direct voice a compact guitar-pop setting; the next tests how far its vocabulary can expand. Listening across them makes the music more interesting than a shorthand account of anger or confession ever could.
Essential releases
Jagged Little Pill
The familiar singles reveal different temperatures, from You Oughta Know’s pressure to the warmer melodic movement of Head over Feet. The range is part of the album’s strength.
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
A more exploratory follow-up, with Thank U providing a clear point of entry into writing that often takes a less predictable route.
Under Rug Swept
A useful 2000s chapter, with Hands Clean among the obvious introductions and the writing continuing to examine personal relationships from an unsettled, questioning perspective.
