Why we feature this artist

Disco as an open invitation

Alcazar make disco-pop with very little interest in understatement. The harmonies are polished, the arrangements are bright and the performers treat the chorus as a place everyone should be able to enter. The pleasure comes from how precisely that sense of abundance is put together.

Finding a familiar groove and changing its colour

Andreas Lundstedt, Tess Merkel and Annikafiore formed the Swedish group in 1998. “Crying at the Discoteque” drew on Sheila and B. Devotion’s “Spacer”, turning an already recognisable disco texture into a new pop record. The vocal arrangement supplied a clear group identity rather than simply riding the sample.

Casino, first released in 2000 and expanded for international audiences, established that combination of older dance-floor references and contemporary pop production. Alcazarized in 2003 developed the sound further, with “Not a Sinner Nor a Saint” becoming an important part of the group’s Swedish story through Melodifestivalen.

The performance inside the record

The line-up changed over time, eventually including Lina Hedlund alongside Lundstedt and Merkel. Disco Defenders in 2009 continued the project’s combination of direct pop melodies, dance rhythm and an openly theatrical performance style.

The best introduction is to hear the first breakthrough beside the later Swedish singles. Alcazar’s records are built around a group presence: one voice steps forward, another answers and the harmony makes the chorus wider. The familiar disco references are the invitation, but the timing and confidence of the singers are what make the party feel like theirs.
