Why we feature this artist

A voice with more history than the single suggests

Ann Lee’s “2 Times” sounds almost disarmingly simple: a small vocal phrase, an easy rhythmic swing and a melody that seems to stay in the air after the track has ended. Behind that apparent lightness is a singer and writer with a much wider place in European dance music.

The singer behind the name

Annerley Gordon became best known to a broad pop audience as Ann Lee, but her work in studios and songwriting reached across numerous dance projects. Her own account places the beginnings of that work in the late 1980s, with later contributions connected to names including Whigfield, Corona and J.K.

“2 Times” arrived at the end of the 1990s, followed by “Voices” and the Dreams album in 1999. The solo records gave a familiar studio voice a clear performance identity of its own, with the relaxed phrasing supplying much of their character.

The craft inside the lightness

The strength of those songs is in how little they need to make their point. Gordon can place a short line in the rhythm without forcing it, letting the melody feel conversational even when it is about to become the most repeated part of the track.

The early Ann Lee singles are an accessible starting point, but they make more sense alongside the wider writing and vocal history. This is pop that depends on timing, blend and the small decisions of an experienced studio singer. The sound may be light, but the craft underneath it is substantial.
