Why we feature this artist
Melody with room to grow
Armin van Buuren’s trance is built around anticipation. A small melodic idea becomes a whole landscape, with the rhythm keeping the music grounded while everything above it opens out. The songs, long DJ sets and A State of Trance broadcasts are different ways into the same musical world.
From Blue Fear to Shivers
The Dutch producer established his name through records including “Blue Fear” and “Communication”, where repeating figures and patient arrangements carried a strong melodic identity. The debut album 76 arrived in 2003. “Yet Another Day” with Ray Wilson and “Burned with Desire” with Justine Suissa showed how readily a song could sit inside the extended architecture of trance.
Shivers in 2005 gave vocal collaboration a still larger role, while Imagine in 2008 brought a broader pop scale to the writing. The records are linked less by one synth sound than by the way they hold back the full emotional release until the arrangement has made space for it.
A scene as well as a catalogue
A State of Trance began in 2001, and Armada Music followed as a label founded with Maykel Piron and David Lewis. Together with his own productions, those platforms made van Buuren a meeting point for other artists and for successive generations of listeners. The work of selecting and presenting records has become as central as making them.
Later albums moved further across styles, including the crossover success of “This Is What It Feels Like” with Trevor Guthrie. The early singles and first artist albums remain a particularly clear introduction: a producer interested in the physical effect of a melody, and willing to give it time to reach the back of the room.
