The story of Armin Van Buuren Ft. Sharon Den Adel
Why we feature this artist
A dramatic voice finds another kind of scale
“In and Out of Love” brings Sharon den Adel’s unmistakable vocal character into Armin van Buuren’s electronic world. The collaboration appeared on Imagine in 2008, with the singer’s clear, expressive phrasing becoming the centre of a large but carefully organised arrangement. Her presence gives the record a dramatic weight that does not depend only on the instrumental build.
A voice carried across genres
Den Adel’s work with Within Temptation had already established a voice capable of moving from close detail to a much larger emotional register. In this setting, electronic rhythm takes the place of the band arrangement around her. The performance retains its individual character while the surrounding music speaks a different language.
The song was released as the second single from Imagine. It belongs to an album that often finds its contrasts through featured vocalists, and this is one of the clearest examples: the producer’s musical identity remains audible, but the singer changes the atmosphere as soon as she enters.
Why the vocal keeps returning
The melody has a strong outline, while the phrasing leaves enough detail inside each line to prevent the refrain from becoming merely functional. The instrumental passages can therefore stretch the record’s scale without making the vocal seem like an excuse for the next build.
Later interpretations, including Rivo’s 2024 reworking, underline the durability of that performance. A different rhythmic frame changes how the song moves, but the voice still supplies its emotional identity. “In and Out of Love” is a collaboration whose recognisable centre survives well beyond the production choices of its original release.
