Why we feature this artist

A State of Trance as a weekly listening history

A State of Trance is Armin van Buuren’s radio programme, rather than a separate performing group. The ASOT credit identifies that broadcast setting: a continuing selection of trance and progressive records, heard through the choices and sequencing of a DJ. Its numbered episodes make the series a history of listening as well as a vehicle for new music.

The programme’s early identity

Armin’s own biography dates the first broadcast to June 2001. Armada’s original archive preserves those early episode numbers, including the first seven editions. The low-numbered programmes belong to the beginning of a format that could introduce individual tracks while also allowing the flow between them to matter.

A broadcast offers a different perspective from an artist album. Its identity comes partly from selection: the host can connect records made by different people and give their contrasts a place within a longer progression.

The show and the artist

The programme subsequently developed an extensive compilation and event history, but its starting point remains the act of sharing music through a regular show. The ASOT name belongs to that curatorial context. Armin’s full biography covers his own production career alongside the radio work, keeping the records he made distinct from the wider catalogue he helped bring to listeners.
