Why we feature this artist
The pull of one repeating phrase
Atlantic Ocean’s “Waterfall” makes a strong argument for doing a few things exceptionally well. The bass line, the keyboard figure and the beat keep circling one another, with enough space in the arrangement for a small change to have a large physical effect.
A Dutch studio partnership
The project brought together Lex van Coeverden and René van der Weyde, producers with a background in DJing, mixing and studio work. “Waterfall” arrived in 1993 and became their defining international record. Its sound sits close to the early meeting of house momentum and the more spacious melodic language that would become central to trance.
The record is memorable without a conventional lead vocal. Instead, the repeating keyboard pattern becomes the character at the centre of the track. The arrangement can withdraw one element and make the remaining parts feel newly prominent, a kind of musical economy that translates particularly well to a club.
Hearing the whole arrangement
The longer versions are useful because they make the construction clearer. The groove needs time to establish itself, and the central figure gains force through its returns. A short edit gives the hook; the full mix explains the patience behind it.
Atlantic Ocean’s place in this catalogue is grounded in that distinctive recording identity. The music does not need a complicated narrative to make its effect. It turns the ordinary materials of a dance track into something unusually durable through proportion, repetition and a firm understanding of how a room listens.
