Birgit Schuurman — a song with someone inside it
Birgit Schuurman’s recordings have always had a strong sense of character. The Dutch singer’s early English-language pop and later work in her own language belong to a career in which singing, acting and storytelling continually inform one another.
Few Like Me opens the record
I Know and Few Like You introduced the central chapter of her early solo career in 2001. Both appear on Few Like Me, an album that gave Birgit an identity in Dutch pop independent of her other public roles. I Know was written by J. Perkin, while the two singles offered different routes into the same voice: direct enough for radio, but with a performance that keeps a particular person in the frame.
The relationship with theatre became increasingly important. Work in productions including De Jantjes and The Last Five Years required the singer to carry a scene as well as a tune. Sticky Tales followed the debut in 2005 through her own BirgitMusic label. That practical step is part of the musical story too: the second album arrived on terms that gave the project another degree of independence.
Changing the language of the story
True Stories I Made Up and A Fool for Love extended the catalogue, while Struikelen in 2024 marked her first Dutch-language album. After years of singing Dutch material in the theatre, writing songs in that language brought a different relationship between the line and the person delivering it. Familiar words can carry conversational detail that a grand vocal gesture would only obscure. The shift also helps connect the apparently separate parts of her career. A character on stage and a singer in the studio both need to make the listener believe the sentence as it arrives. Birgit’s records are most engaging when that sense of intention is close to the surface, whether the arrangement is bright and public or gives a small confession more space.
