Why we feature this artist
An old vocal finds a different room
Boogie Pimps’ breakthrough turns a familiar rock-era voice into the centre of a house record. The recognisable phrase catches the ear, but the groove gives it a new physical setting, letting repetition change the way the line feels. The joke and the musical craft arrive together.
The Salt Shaker record
The German project reached an international audience through “Somebody to Love”, often identified by its Salt Shaker remix title, in 2003 and 2004. The production draws on the Jefferson Airplane recording, placing a dramatic vocal inside a much more tightly controlled dance arrangement.
The contrast is the whole point. A voice associated with a loose, psychedelic rock setting becomes a rhythmic event, with the beat and bass line making the same words sound newly urgent. The arrangement is careful about how much of the source it reveals at once.
The production beyond the recognition
Later releases and remixes continued the project’s interest in recognisable hooks and a direct club response. The official catalogue presents a wider house-production practice around the record that first travelled furthest.
The original extended versions are the clearest way in. A short edit introduces the sample, but the longer arrangement reveals the pacing around it: when the drums thin out, how the phrase returns and why another pass can feel more forceful than the last. The record works because the sample is treated as material to shape, rather than a finished idea.
