Booty Luv — two R&B voices find the house groove
Booty Luv gave Cherise Roberts and Nadia Shepherd a different setting after Big Brovaz. The duo carried the assurance of experienced R&B singers into club-pop arrangements, letting harmony and vocal character do as much work as the beat.
A cover becomes an introduction
Boogie 2Nite arrived in 2006 through Hed Kandi and Ministry of Sound, reworking Tweet’s song for a different dance-floor setting. The single reached number two in the UK. Its appeal comes from the balance: the production makes an immediate invitation, while the voices keep enough shape and personality to prevent the hook becoming merely a repeated instruction. The song moves because the singing moves inside it.
Shine and Don’t Mess with My Man followed in 2007, extending the conversation with existing R&B repertoire. For Roberts and Shepherd, these records were also a change in perspective. A pair of voices has to establish its own relationship, deciding where to reinforce a phrase and where to let one singer give it a slightly different pressure. That interaction supplies a musical identity beyond the choice of familiar source songs.
Original songs inside the album
The Boogie 2Nite album appeared in 2007 and included substantial original material with writing contributions from the duo themselves. Some Kinda Rush is an important part of that statement, carrying the same confident vocal approach into a song that belongs to this project’s own writing history. Say It followed as a single in 2009. Taken together, the recordings describe a partnership with more to offer than a run of dance covers. Their strongest quality is the sense that the vocal has been considered as a performance rather than an ingredient to fit over a loop. Even when the arrangement is bright and emphatic, a held note or a change in the phrasing can introduce another layer of anticipation before the chorus comes round again.
