The story of Carly Rae Jepsen

Why we feature this artist

The pop chorus as a very specific feeling

Carly Rae Jepsen makes longing feel active. Her songs can be full of rhythmic sparkle while the voice works through uncertainty, anticipation or the wish to say something before the moment disappears. The choruses are immediately available, but the best records give that brightness a surprisingly precise emotional purpose.

The invitation everyone heard

Tug of War in 2008 introduced a more acoustic early setting before “Call Me Maybe” changed the scale of her career. First released in 2011, the single made a tentative introduction feel like an event through the relationship between the strings, rhythm and sharply defined refrain. Jepsen’s delivery preserved the awkwardness of the situation, allowing the enormous pop hook to remain connected to a very small human risk.

Kiss in 2012 gathered a bright, concise pop identity around that breakthrough. “This Kiss” and the Owl City collaboration “Good Time” offered other immediately welcoming entrances. The music was polished without requiring the singer to sound emotionally certain. A line could be direct in its melodic shape while still carrying the feeling of someone deciding whether to make the next move.

The album gives the feeling more room

E•MO•TION in 2015 expanded the production world considerably. “Run Away with Me” opened a larger, richly detailed setting, while songs such as “Your Type” and “All That” made room for more private shades of longing. The album’s interest in older synthesizer and pop textures served the emotional perspective of the songs, giving an uncertain feeling a vivid, colourful space in which to unfold.

Dedicated and the later companion releases continued that attention to small melodic and production decisions. Jepsen’s catalogue rewards hearing the albums beyond the most familiar single because the emotional range becomes clearer over time. The music repeatedly finds a way to make hesitation feel energetic, with the voice caught between the pleasure of imagining a possibility and the discomfort of not yet knowing how it will end.
