The story of Chiddy Bang
Why we feature this artist
A familiar sample put to a different kind of work
Chiddy Bang’s early records made a rap verse feel at home inside bright, slightly eccentric pop production. Chiddy’s agile delivery and Xaphoon Jones’s sample-based arrangements created an identity in which a familiar melodic fragment could become the starting point for something with another rhythmic and emotional character.
The borrowed melody changes its surroundings
“Opposite of Adults” brought the duo to a wider audience in 2010, using MGMT’s “Kids” as a central sample. The recognisable figure provided an immediate entrance, while the beat and vocal gave it a different kind of momentum. Chiddy’s phrasing kept the record active, making the sample feel like a partner in the performance rather than a famous object placed behind an unrelated verse.
The Preview in the same year gave the early sound a fuller setting. “Truth” drew on Passion Pit’s “Better Things”, showing another use of the duo’s interest in melodic source material. The production could be playful and brightly coloured while the delivery retained a clear rap identity. The strongest tracks made those elements feel connected, with the sample’s emotional associations changed by what happened rhythmically around it.
The album gives the partnership more space
Breakfast in 2012 moved the project into a full-length album frame. “Mind Your Manners”, featuring Icona Pop, and “Ray Charles” offered particularly direct entrances, each built around a different melodic and rhythmic idea. The record showed that the duo’s musical identity could accommodate more than one kind of sample or guest voice without losing its buoyant sense of movement.
Later changes in the project’s structure made the original partnership a relatively compact part of the wider Chiddy Bang story. Those early recordings remain interesting because of the conversation between producer and rapper. A melodic fragment establishes a mood, then a verse bends its meaning through timing, humour or an unexpected line. The music works best when both sides remain clearly audible, giving the listener the pleasure of recognition and discovery in the same passage.
