The story of David Guetta Feat. Akon
Why we feature this artist
An instantly identifiable singer over a stripped-back pulse
“Sexy Chick” places Akon’s recognisable singing inside David Guetta’s concise, sharply defined 2009 production. The track uses a small number of musical ideas with unusual directness: a firm pulse, a repeated instrumental figure and a vocal line designed to establish itself quickly. Akon’s tone gives those repeated elements a clear personality.
The One Love period
The original Gum release belongs to Guetta’s One Love chapter, when his catalogue brought an increasing number of internationally recognised voices into electronic pop singles. The Akon collaboration is one of the most concentrated examples, with the performance and the beat kept close to the surface.
The song circulated under both “Sexy Chick” and an explicit alternate title. Those editions belong to the same central recording history, with the adjusted wording reflecting its presentation for different settings. The featured vocal remains the immediate point of recognition.
The economy is the point
The arrangement does not need to keep introducing new material. Akon’s phrasing changes the emphasis of a line, and the production withdraws or restores layers around a stable rhythmic centre. The listener knows the track’s outline very quickly, which makes each return feel direct.
The recording captures a particular stage in Guetta’s crossover into broad pop visibility. The singer retains an individual tone, while the producer gives the performance a compact electronic frame. “Sexy Chick” gets its force from that clear division of roles and from the precision with which a few recognisable ideas are repeated.
