Why we feature this artist
The DJ at the edge of a pop moment
DJ Jurgen’s best-known records connect a working club DJ’s instincts with melodies large enough to cross into pop. The tracks are direct, but their effectiveness depends on the space around the hook and the sense that the beat can keep going beyond the short edit.
The Better Off Alone connection
Dutch DJ and producer Jürgen Rijkers became internationally associated with “Better Off Alone” in 1998, initially credited through DJ Jurgen presents Alice Deejay. The record’s combination of a spare vocal question and a bright melodic line gave it a distinct character, while the surrounding production kept it firmly connected to the dance floor.
The Alice Deejay project developed its own performance identity, and Jurgen continued releasing and DJing under his own name. “Higher & Higher” became an important solo record, retaining the open melodic feeling while giving the vocal a more overtly uplifting role.
The work beyond the familiar hook
Releases including “Wicked Waves”, “Higher Love” and later singles extend the catalogue beyond those early hits. Radio and club work are also part of the story, connecting the productions to the longer activity of selecting and presenting music.
Jurgen is best understood through that continuity. A crossover single can become far larger than the setting that produced it, but the underlying decisions remain a DJ’s decisions: how quickly to establish the groove, when to let a melody open and when a familiar figure has earned another return.
