Why we feature this artist

The patient build of an early trance world

The early Tiësto catalogue makes a strong case for trance as an album and a long-set experience. The melodies matter, but so do the darker stretches, the instrumental passages and the time allowed for a vocal to arrive. The sound can be enormous without being in a hurry.

The first artist albums

Dutch DJ and producer Tijs Verwest built his name through club sets and mix series before releasing In My Memory in 2001. The album placed vocal records such as the Nicola Hitchcock title track beside instrumentals with a different kind of weight. “Flight 643” makes its effect through a repeating figure and a persistent rhythmic pull rather than a conventional song structure.

Just Be in 2004 broadened the vocal side, with Kirsty Hawkshaw on the title track and BT on “Love Comes Again”. Instrumental material remained important, giving the album room to move between a recognisable song and the longer, less verbal language of the dance floor.

Scale and the space around it

Elements of Life in 2007 continued that album-oriented approach. Later work moved more decisively into other forms of electronic dance music, but the early releases remain a coherent world of their own: widescreen pads, firm percussion and melodic lines that change the atmosphere gradually.

For listeners arriving through the later pop hits, In My Memory and Just Be offer a useful different perspective. The strongest moments often depend on what happens before the main hook. A long introduction or a restrained passage is part of the emotional design, making the eventual lift feel like a destination.
