Why we feature this artist
Pop clarity with a club instinct
EliZe's Automatic finds its strength in a bright, firmly drawn vocal line. The Dutch singer Elise van der Horst developed a pop sound that could work beside dance records without disappearing into their production. Her early singles balance the momentum of the beat with the personality of the person singing.
From early performance to In Control
Van der Horst began performing as a child through Kinderen voor Kinderen before developing the EliZe recording identity. A Spinnin' Records signing in 2004 led into the first run of singles, with Danish producers Peter Hartmann and Jan Langhoff among her collaborators. Shake made the initial introduction; Automatic followed in 2005 and reached the Dutch Top 10.
I'm No Latino and Into Your System expanded the campaign before the debut album In Control appeared in 2006. The songs share a polished surface, but their usefulness as pop depends on more than the backing track. The vocal has to make a short refrain feel definite, while the arrangement gives it enough rhythmic space to become memorable. EliZe's delivery is direct enough to keep that relationship clear even when the production becomes busy.
Taking a larger role in the writing
The next period brought more of her own songwriting into the project, with The Beatfreakz among the producers involved. Lovesick appeared in 2008, followed by the album More Than Meets the Eye in 2009. The later campaign also included Can't You Feel It, produced by Hi-Tack, and a version of Donna Summer's Hot Stuff. Those choices show an artist working within pop's mixture of new writing, collaboration and reinterpretation. The defining feature is the ability to hold a melody in a strongly produced setting without giving up an individual voice. Automatic remains the most immediate introduction, while the two albums show how that skill was developed across different songs and studio partnerships. The records work best when the vocal sounds as decisive as the beat beneath it.
