The story of Ella Eyre
Why we feature this artist
A big soul voice with a drum-and-bass engine
Ella Eyre's voice can make a fast electronic track feel like a live confrontation. It is rough around the edges, immediately forceful and capable of carrying a melody over a very busy beat. Waiting All Night introduced that combination to a large audience; her solo records explored what happened when the singer herself set the terms.
The Rudimental breakthrough
Rudimental's Waiting All Night reached number one in Britain in 2013, with Eyre's vocal providing its emotional centre. The drums run at a pace that could easily overwhelm a less assertive performance. Instead, her repeated phrases give the track a clear human shape, carrying a sense of urgency that survives all the surrounding rhythmic activity.
The Deeper EP arrived later that year, introducing original solo material and another side of her delivery. Eyre could reduce the scale without sounding diminished: the grain of the voice became more obvious when there was less production around it. Her early catalogue moved between that intimacy and songs designed to produce an immediate, full-bodied rush.
Feline and the solo singles
If I Go, Comeback and Together helped establish the sound of Feline, her 2015 debut album. The arrangements brought live-sounding punch to pop structures, making room for sharp rhythmic accents and emphatic responses in the vocal. Comeback in particular uses defiance as an organising principle, with the performance supplying as much of the attitude as the lyric.
Eyre also continued to appear on other artists' records, a format especially well suited to a voice that can establish its identity within a few seconds. Those collaborations should not obscure the solo work, where the phrasing has more room to change from song to song. Feline captures the early balance between a singer trained to hold attention and production built to keep moving.
