The story of Ella Henderson
Why we feature this artist
From an early audition to a songbook of her own
Ella Henderson made her first strong impression with an original song, before the machinery around television fame had fully begun. That matters to the records that followed. Her large, expressive voice is the most obvious feature, but songs such as Ghost also depend on a writer's feel for a clear emotional situation and an insistent hook.
Chapter One
The Lincolnshire singer appeared on The X Factor in 2012. Rather than moving straight into an album, she spent time developing material with established collaborators. Ghost, co-written with Ryan Tedder, arrived in 2014 and reached number one in Britain. Its steady pulse and gospel shading gave the vocal both a firm foundation and something substantial to push against.
Chapter One followed that year, including Glow, Yours and Mirror Man. The singles reveal useful differences in scale: Yours is comparatively exposed, while Ghost is built to gather force through repetition. Henderson's delivery can carry both, moving between a low, controlled phrase and a full, resonant line without making them sound like separate personalities.
A longer second chapter
There was a substantial gap before Everything I Didn't Say appeared in 2022. During the intervening years, collaborations brought her voice into dance production, including Glitterball with Sigma and This Is Real with Jax Jones. The rhythm and production changed, but the songs still made their strongest impression when a direct vocal phrase cut through the surrounding activity.
The second album gave those intervening experiences a more personal setting, with Brave among its central songs. It also placed vulnerability alongside the obvious power of the singing. Henderson's early career was often presented as a rapid discovery story; the space between her first two albums tells a less tidy story about finding collaborators, rebuilding confidence and deciding what belongs in a song bearing your own name.
