Why we feature this artist

The performer inside the familiar image

The image of Elvis Presley is so large that it can hide the work of the singer. On record, his interest lies in movement: between country and rhythm and blues, between a nearly spoken phrase and a sudden release of power, between the small-room intimacy of Sun and the highly charged performances of his later career.

The early recordings and the return from service

The Memphis sessions for Sam Phillips at Sun in the fifties brought Elvis together with guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black. Their recordings found excitement in a light, mobile sound, using space and rhythmic suggestion as much as volume. The move to RCA and the 1956 self-titled album gave that developing identity a far larger audience.

Elvis Is Back! followed his military service in 1960. Its range is revealing: blues, pop and other American song traditions sit together without needing to be presented as a formal survey. Reconsider Baby and Such a Night show a singer enjoying changes of texture and pace. The controlled performances complicate any account that treats his earliest rock and roll as the whole artistic story.

The Memphis sessions of 1969

After the 1968 television special, Elvis recorded at American Sound Studio with producer Chips Moman. From Elvis in Memphis emerged in 1969, bringing a close, highly responsive band sound to material including Long Black Limousine and In the Ghetto. The arrangements give the words weight without requiring the singer to lean on every line at full strength.

Those sessions also produced Suspicious Minds, issued separately as a single. The tension between an ingratiating groove and a relationship trapped in mistrust makes it one of his most persuasive performances. Across these different periods, the musical achievement is often in the choices inside a phrase: where he delays a syllable, roughens the tone or suddenly lets the voice open into the room.
