Why we feature this artist
A radio introduction becomes a songwriter's story
Falco Luneau's Nobody began as a compact introduction to a singer finding his first broad audience. The later songs make the picture more complete: an approachable pop-rock voice, a clear melodic instinct and a growing interest in how a song can work both on a record and in a live room.
Nobody opens the door
The Dutch singer grew up in Austria before establishing himself in the Netherlands. A Radio 538 talent competition brought him a recording opportunity in 2009, and Nobody became the resulting breakthrough single. That route explains the initial exposure, but the recording still had to supply an identity of its own. The melody and the delivery were the elements a listener could carry away after the competition had ended.
The next important partnership was with songwriter and musician Tony Cornelissen. Their work led to No One's Fool in 2012 and the album Years from Now, released that June. The album gave Luneau a longer setting than the first radio single, with songs able to develop a recognisable relationship between the vocal, the refrain and the instrumental backing.
Hearing the songs in another room
His July 2012 appearance on NPO 3FM's Giel programme is a useful document of that period. He performed No One's Fool and Years from Now alongside a version of The Gaslight Anthem's 45, placing his own material beside another song in the same live setting. The comparison shows the practical side of a pop-rock singer's craft: a phrase must keep its shape when the production is reduced and the performance has to carry the movement. Later releases continued to include unplugged recordings as well as studio singles. The thread connecting those different presentations is the song rather than a fixed studio texture. Nobody catches the moment of introduction, while Years from Now and the live sessions show an artist learning how to make that first impression hold across a wider set of material.
