The story of French Affair
Why we feature this artist
A voice at the centre of the dance record
French Affair's My Heart Goes Boom (La Di Da Da) turns a small vocal phrase into an entire pop identity. The record's lightness is carefully constructed: a memorable voice, a simple melodic signal and a dance arrangement that leaves both enough room to be recognised immediately.
Barbara Alcindor and the Dreyer production team
The recording credits bring the partnership into focus. Barbara Alcindor is credited with the lyrics of My Heart Goes Boom, with Karsten and Torsten Dreyer credited for the composition and Torsten for production. Universal's later catalogue credits also identify Alcindor's vocals and both Dreyers' production work on I Want Your Love. French Affair was a collaboration between a distinctive singer and an experienced studio team.
My Heart Goes Boom became the defining introduction in 2000. Its refrain does not depend on a complicated narrative: rhythm, syllables and vocal character do much of the work. The title suggests an emotional event and a physical beat at once, a particularly efficient idea for a record moving between radio and clubs. Different mixes could change its length and emphasis while keeping that central identity easy to follow.
Beyond the first refrain
Sexy carried the name into the following year's European airplay listings, while Desire gave the early repertoire an album setting. The later Rendezvous, released in 2006, placed French-language titles such as Symphonie d'amour, Je Pense à Toi and Bossa Paris together in a new programme. That change draws attention to another aspect of the project: the voice and the language help create the atmosphere as much as the rhythm does. The early international hit can seem almost weightless, but its construction is precise. A phrase must arrive at the right moment, leave the right amount of space, and remain attractive when it returns. French Affair's particular strength was making that calculation feel casual, as if the refrain had simply appeared already familiar.
