Why we feature this artist
Three musicians, an expanding circle
Freundeskreis made German hip-hop feel open to a much wider musical conversation. Max Herre, Don Philippe and DJ Friction brought rap, production and musicianship together in records that could move from an intimate encounter to a larger view of the world without losing the pull of the groove.
A-N-N-A and the Stuttgart beginnings
The partnership grew out of Stuttgart's connected musical scene. Herre's writing and delivery met Philippe Kayser's studio experience as Don Philippe and DJ Friction's work with samples and turntables. Their move to Four Music in 1996 led into Quadratur des Kreises, released the following February. The album gave the trio a substantial introduction, with A-N-N-A becoming its best-known single.
The single's original release package is revealing in itself. Radio versions labelled 1995, 1996 and 1997 appear alongside dub and acoustic treatments, showing a song developed and reconsidered rather than simply recorded once. A-N-N-A can serve as an accessible point of entry, but the surrounding album gives its conversational rap a broader setting. The group's identity comes from the exchange between words, rhythm and carefully chosen instrumental colour.
From Esperanto to the FK Allstars
Esperanto followed in 1999, widening the collaborative frame with songs including Mit dir with Joy Denalane and the title track with Déborah. The expanded FK Allstars performances then made that network of musicians audible on stage. Four Music's own history documents the winter 1999 tour recordings released as En Directo in 2000, with Gentleman, Afrob, Sékou, Denalane and Brooke Russell among those involved. This progression matters more than a simple move from small venues to larger audiences. It shows the group's central idea becoming a practical way of making music: a track could begin with three people and still make room for another voice or a different instrumental response. The live record gives that idea its most physical form, with a shared repertoire becoming an exchange between performers.
