Why we feature this artist

A familiar voice in a less crowded room

Fyfe Dangerfield's solo recordings bring the singer behind Guillemots into a more direct setting. The band had made a virtue of colour, sudden movement and unusual combinations of instruments. Fly Yellow Moon set much of that machinery aside, leaving a strong melodic voice and songs whose emotional changes were easier to hear at close range.

The Guillemots context

Dangerfield became widely known through Guillemots, whose debut Through the Windowpane included Made-Up Lovesong #43 and Trains to Brazil. His singing could sound both urgent and tender, a useful centre for a band whose arrangements regularly took unexpected turns. The appeal lay partly in the sense that an exuberant performance might suddenly reveal a much more vulnerable feeling.

Fly Yellow Moon appeared under his own name in 2010. Faster Than the Setting Sun and She Needs Me kept some rhythmic lift, but other songs allowed the piano or a restrained accompaniment to determine the scale. The difference was not a retreat from ambition; it was a decision to let fewer details carry more of the meaning.

The unexpected public introduction

A version of Billy Joel's She's Always a Woman reached a large audience through a John Lewis advertisement in the same year. It subsequently appeared as a bonus track alongside the album material. The performance showed how well Dangerfield could inhabit a familiar song without needing to make a conspicuous change to its melodic outline.

Barricades provides another useful perspective on the record, giving the voice room to expand while keeping the emotional setting close. Hearing these songs beside the early Guillemots material makes the shared instincts clearer: an attraction to melodic lift, an expressive break in the vocal and a willingness to let tenderness remain slightly awkward. The solo album changes the size of the frame, making those qualities easier to inspect.
