Gala: a dance chorus with a point of view
Gala’s voice has a slightly husky directness which gives a bright dance arrangement a human edge. The chorus can be designed for a crowd, yet the delivery still sounds like someone making a particular statement. That balance runs through Freed from Desire and Come into My Life.
The first album world
Freed from Desire appeared in 1996, followed by the album Come into My Life in 1997. Work with Molella and Phil Jay gave the early songs a strong electronic frame: clear melodic figures, a steady dance pulse and a vocal placed firmly at the centre.
The familiar refrain of Freed from Desire has a collective quality, but the verses establish a distinct tone before it arrives. Gala’s phrasing can be cool and conversational while the production is already moving at full speed. That difference gives the record some of its lasting character.
Come into My Life
The title song makes more room for a sense of invitation and movement. The melody has a broad shape, and the voice can hold a line against the rhythm without trying to match every instrumental detail.
Hearing it beside Freed from Desire makes the first era feel less like one song extended into an album. The same singer can sound insistent in one setting and more open in another, with the production responding to the mood of the writing.
An independent chapter
Tough Love followed in 2009 through Gala’s Matriarchy Records. Later releases included Taste of Me, The Beautiful and Parallel Lines, extending the catalogue beyond the early singles.
The continuity is in the combination of a recognisable vocal colour and a song which has something to say before it becomes a chant. A good dance hook can be shared by thousands of people without losing the person who first gave it a voice.
