Why we feature this artist

Giovanca: a light touch with a soul singer’s timing

Giovanca’s voice can make a rhythm feel more relaxed without slowing it down. The Dutch singer’s solo records bring soul, jazz and pop into a carefully balanced setting, with a bright tone and small rhythmic decisions doing much of the expressive work. Drop It gives that approach a particularly direct shape.

Stepping forward

Before her solo albums, Giovanca Ostiana worked extensively as a studio and backing singer. Subway Silence appeared in 2008, produced by Benny Sings, with On My Way introducing a voice ready to take the centre of the arrangement.

The production gives the performance a distinct world rather than simply a neutral backing. Short instrumental figures, clear bass movement and well-placed spaces let the vocal sound conversational. The singer can make a small change of inflection matter because the mix leaves room to hear it.

While I’m Awake

The second album followed in March 2010, again produced by Benny Sings. Drop It sits alongside songs including Everything, Lovechild, Flirting with the Sun and Where Love Lives.

There is a useful economy in the way the songs are built. A groove can be playful without becoming crowded, and the vocal does not have to push to remain present. Giovanca’s phrasing makes the line feel active even when the tone stays light.

A broader palette

Satellite Love arrived in 2013, opening further towards the sounds of 1970s soul, jazz, Latin music and funk. The change widened a musical interest already audible in the first records: a voice and an arrangement finding a shared rhythm rather than competing for attention.

Drop It remains an inviting introduction because the performance feels so comfortable inside the track. The ease is the result of timing, tone and proportion, with each small part helping the next one land.
