Why we feature this artist

Old soul, strange pictures and a very modern beat

Gnarls Barkley sounded familiar and slightly wrong in a particularly appealing way. CeeLo Green brought the expressive force of soul singing, while Danger Mouse built settings from samples, sharp rhythmic decisions and a taste for unusual atmosphere. Crazy was the extraordinary point of contact with a mass audience; the albums around it had stranger corridors to explore.

St. Elsewhere

The two musicians arrived with substantial separate histories: CeeLo had worked with Goodie Mob and as a solo artist, while Danger Mouse had developed a distinctive production identity through his own records and collaborations. St. Elsewhere appeared in 2006. Crazy became its defining single, carrying an unsettled question inside a melody and arrangement that seemed instantly recognisable.

The album did not simply repeat that formula. Smiley Faces had its own bright rhythmic lift, while a version of the Violent Femmes' Gone Daddy Gone introduced a different kind of nervous energy. CeeLo's singing could be generous and commanding, but the surrounding sounds often placed him in a scene with an uncertain emotional temperature.

The Odd Couple

The Odd Couple followed in 2008, including Run (I'm a Natural Disaster), Going On and Who's Gonna Save My Soul. It continued the dialogue with older soul and psychedelic pop while making the atmosphere more explicitly troubled in places. The voice on Who's Gonna Save My Soul feels especially exposed, with the arrangement leaving its central question hanging in the room.

The records work because the partnership involves more than a strong singer placed over inventive beats. Danger Mouse's settings can alter the meaning of CeeLo's delivery, making an apparently reassuring phrase feel ambiguous or turning theatrical confidence into a sign of strain. Their short album catalogue leaves room for humour, anxiety and beauty to occupy the same song without being neatly sorted into separate categories.
