Guru Josh Project: Infinity returns in a different shape

Infinity 2008 takes a melody already connected to the first wave of rave culture and gives it a much sharper electro-house frame. The saxophone remains the point of recognition, while the new rhythm and bass change the way the track moves. Guru Josh Project is the credit for that later production chapter.

The original melody

Guru Josh’s original Infinity became widely known in 1990. The tune has a strong instrumental identity: a short saxophone phrase can carry the record through repeated changes in the surrounding arrangement.

That is an unusually useful quality for a dance composition. The theme can remain familiar while the production around it moves into another period. A listener recognises the musical gesture before noticing how differently the drums and bass are behaving.

The 2008 production

The official Infinity 2008 credits name Guru Josh, Daz Perkz and SnakeByte as producers, with Paul Walden credited for the composition. The project’s best-known version is the Klaas Vocal Edit, remixed by Klaas Gerling.

Those roles explain the recording more clearly than treating the whole history as one unchanged artist name. The composition comes from the earlier work; the 2008 production and Klaas treatment give it a different rhythmic vocabulary. The familiar saxophone phrase becomes the release point inside a more tightly wound electronic track.

A recognisable idea survives

The contrast between the versions is the attraction. The later record does not need to disguise the source melody, and the melody does not prevent the production from sounding like its own era.

Infinity 2008 is a useful example of a dance track being renewed through arrangement. The tune gives the listener a memory, while the remix changes the physical experience of that memory arriving.
