The story of Gwen Stefani Ft. Akon
Why we feature this artist
Akon's second role in The Sweet Escape
The Sweet Escape is a Gwen Stefani recording with Akon inside both the performance and the production. His repeated vocal response is one of its most recognisable features, but the original credits also connect him to its programming, keyboards and writing.
The 2006 album and 2007 single
The track appeared on Stefani's 2006 album of the same name and developed its wider single life the following year. Giorgio Tuinfort shares the writing with Stefani and Akon and is credited as co-producer, with additional programming and keyboards helping establish the song's economical rhythmic setting.
The answer around the lead melody
Stefani gives the song a restless mixture of apology and determination. Akon's more rounded response supplies a recurring place of relief around that lead performance. The contrast is useful because the arrangement remains light: it can suggest emotional complication without becoming heavy or crowded. The record's lift comes partly from this small exchange between two kinds of phrasing. A short returning vocal can give the lead singer something to push against, then make the next melodic turn feel easier.
