Why we feature this artist
Hind Laroussi: a voice comfortable in more than one musical language
Hind Laroussi’s voice has the warmth and flexibility to move between pop, soul and Arabic influences without making each change sound like a new identity. The Dutch singer’s early records give that range a clear pop frame, while the phrasing suggests a wider musical vocabulary.
Around the World
Hind’s first solo album, Around the World, appeared in 2003 after her introduction through the Dutch Idols programme. Summer All Over Again gave the record an immediate point of entry, followed by a version of SWV’s Weak.
The singing can be assured without becoming rigid. A phrase has room to move around the beat, and a change of tone can alter the feeling of a line without requiring a much larger arrangement. That control gives the polished early recordings a recognisable centre.
Halfway Home
Halfway Home followed in 2005, with Give Me a Sign as its lead single. The writing and production credits name Anthony James and Yiorgos Bellapaisiotis, whose setting gives the voice a direct, rhythm-conscious pop song to inhabit.
The song’s appeal is in the fit between the melodic line and the forward motion underneath it. Hind can hold a phrase with enough weight to make its feeling register, then return quickly to the rhythm. The performance keeps the arrangement from becoming merely smooth.
The wider catalogue
Your Heart Belongs to Me took her to Eurovision for the Netherlands in 2008, and Crosspop followed as an album chapter in 2010. Later recordings under the Laroussi name brought Arabic-language pop more explicitly into the foreground.
Those changes develop an interest already present in the early work. The voice is the connecting point: a clear tone, a feel for the rhythm of the words, and the ability to let different musical traditions influence the song without obscuring its melody.
