The story of Hot Chip
Why we feature this artist
Dance music that leaves the hesitation in
Hot Chip make electronic pop feel like it is being worked out by people in the room. The grooves can be exact, but the voices leave space for shyness, humour and uncertainty. That mixture gives the big dance moments a character that a more invulnerable performance might lose.
The first records
Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard became the central writing voices of a London band whose early sound mixed domestic-scale electronics with soul, pop and an appetite for odd rhythmic turns. Coming on Strong in 2004 introduced that particular balance before The Warning in 2006 brought a much larger audience.
“Over and Over” made repetition an explicit musical idea, while “And I Was a Boy from School” showed the tenderness inside the same electronic world. The band could make a hook feel immediate without making the emotion underneath it simple.
The band opens the arrangement
Made in the Dark in 2008 widened the contrasts, placing the physical attack of “Ready for the Floor” beside more restrained material. Later albums continued moving between club momentum, careful songwriting and the sound of musicians responding to one another.
The Warning remains the clearest first listen, followed by the different temperatures of Made in the Dark. The strongest Hot Chip songs let the rhythm offer confidence while the singer remains less certain. The dance floor becomes a place where those two feelings can exist together rather than cancel each other out.
