Why we feature this artist
Ida Engberg: a melodic record and a wider DJ vocabulary
Disco Volante is an unusually vivid introduction to Ida Engberg: a clear melodic idea, an electronic sound with some bite, and a rhythm built to keep moving while the arrangement opens up. The Swedish DJ and producer’s wider work makes room for both that immediate melodic pull and a more gradual, hypnotic kind of tension.
Disco Volante
The original Disco Volante release appeared on Pickadoll in 2007. Its central figure has enough shape to remain recognisable through the changes around it. The track can feel bright and expansive while the rhythm keeps a firm, uncomplicated direction.
The original release also included remixes by John and Jesper Dahlbäck and by Sébastien Léger. Those versions place a strong musical idea in other producers’ hands, making the differences in rhythmic weight, texture and pacing especially easy to hear.
The producer and the selector
A distinctive single is only one part of a DJ’s musical identity. In Engberg’s case, the broader profile developed around electronic music that can build its effect patiently, through a bass movement, a changing texture or a carefully delayed return.
That is a different scale of organisation from the compact identity of a famous track. A record needs its own shape; a set also needs relationships between records. The two activities share an ear for tension, but ask for different kinds of attention.
A room of her own
The MYSTIK residency at Ibiza’s Club Chinois, launched in 2023, gave that longer-form approach a recurring setting. It belongs to a career built through both production and the practical work of selecting music for a room.
Disco Volante remains a good starting point because its construction is so clear. From there, the wider DJ work reveals how a performer associated with one memorable melody can make atmosphere, duration and the movement between tracks just as important.
