The story of Iglu & Hartly
Why we feature this artist
Big choruses with the seams still showing
Iglu and Hartly make the meeting of pop, rap phrasing and bright synthesiser sounds feel deliberately unruly. The Los Angeles band reached a wide audience through In This City and the 2008 And Then Boom album, music whose open choruses carry a slightly scruffy, restless energy. The appeal is less immaculate cool than the feeling of several ideas rushing toward the same refrain.
The first album's open-air sound
In This City has a useful sense of space. The vocal moves between rhythmic detail and a much broader hook, while the instrumental setting gives the whole song a sunlit, expansive surface. It is direct pop writing without the feeling that every rough edge has been polished out.
And Then Boom places that single among tracks including Dayglo, Tomorrow and Out There. The album setting makes the band's mixture easier to hear as a continuing language: synthesiser brightness, a band rhythm section and voices comfortable changing their manner of attack within the same song.
The old record is not the whole catalogue
The band returned to its early material through later official video and deluxe editions, including a 2022 release of the In This City demo. That version offers a different view of a familiar song, making the earlier musical idea available alongside the finished recording.
Newer singles such as 2023's Swayze show the name continuing beyond the first album's radio moment. The scale remains generous, with the chorus treated as somewhere a listener can join in rather than a distant display of technique. Across the old and newer material, the most recognisable quality is that sense of bright pop energy arriving with a little disorder still attached.
