The story of jam spoon
Why we feature this artist
Trance atmosphere with a song waiting inside
Jam & Spoon moved easily between patient electronic atmosphere and a pop chorus large enough to travel. The strongest records do not make those sides feel separate. A long instrumental passage can establish the feeling that a singer later gives words to, with the rhythm holding the whole world together.
The Frankfurt partnership
Jam El Mar and Mark Spoon formed the German duo in the early 1990s. “Stella”, released in 1992, became a defining early trance recording through its patient arrangement and unusually clear melodic atmosphere. The music needed time to make its full emotional shape audible.
The Tripomatic Fairytales albums in 1993 offered different sides of the same partnership. “Right in the Night (Fall in Love with Music)”, featuring Plavka, brought a much more direct vocal and melodic identity, while other material kept the more expansive instrumental route open.
The chorus and the longer journey
Further Plavka collaborations and remixes extended the catalogue through the 1990s. The duo’s work helped make clear that an electronic production could be both a DJ’s long-form tool and a distinct pop song, without one role simply replacing the other.
Begin with “Stella”, then the original “Right in the Night” and the surrounding album material. The contrast is the useful introduction. Jam & Spoon could make a single melodic idea feel suspended for several minutes, then turn towards a singer whose presence changed the scale immediately. Their identity lies in how naturally those possibilities sit together.
