The story of Jessica Simpson

Why we feature this artist

The big voice and the lighter step

Jessica Simpson’s early recordings introduced a singer comfortable with a large melodic gesture. The voice could rise firmly above a polished arrangement, making the ballad an obvious first setting. The catalogue becomes more interesting when its lighter rhythms and more playful performances are allowed to share the picture with that initial display of vocal strength.

From Sweet Kisses to In This Skin

Sweet Kisses arrived in 1999, with “I Wanna Love You Forever” making the vocal scale immediately clear. The album belongs to a highly polished turn-of-the-millennium pop world, but the best point of recognition is the physical character of the singing rather than one particular studio effect.

Irresistible followed in 2001, giving the title track a more overtly rhythmic pop setting. In This Skin in 2003 then made room for “With You”, where a more relaxed delivery and a clear guitar-pop frame changed the balance again. The songs show different ways of using the same voice rather than simply increasing the size of every chorus.

A familiar tune becomes another kind of pop single

“These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” appeared in 2005 in connection with The Dukes of Hazzard. Its rhythmic, playful approach draws attention to a different side of Simpson’s delivery, with the performance depending on timing and character as much as vocal range.

The movement between these recordings gives the music a more useful history than the surrounding celebrity story alone. A large ballad, a tightly programmed dance-pop track and a looser guitar-led song each set a different problem for the singer. Simpson’s clearest moments come when the delivery fits the particular scale of the material, allowing the lighter touch to carry as much personality as the more obvious high note.
