Why we feature this artist
The pop singer behind the short name
The Jim credit on “On and On”, “This Is It” and “This Love Is Real” belongs to Dutch singer Jim Bakkum. The early recordings introduce a direct, clearly phrased pop voice, with a bright melodic approach that sits comfortably inside an economical band arrangement. The short name on the sleeve is one part of a much longer performing career.
The first records after Idols
Bakkum reached a broad Dutch audience through the first edition of Idols in 2002–2003, finishing second in the final. “Tell Her” became his first major solo single, followed by the album Impressed in 2003. “This Love Is Real” belongs to that first album setting, where the vocal is placed firmly at the centre of the song.
Ready followed in 2004, opening with “On and On” and “This Is It”. The guitar-pop frame gives the singing a clear rhythmic path, allowing a short refrain to make its point quickly. The arrangements do not have to become complicated in order to give the voice a useful contrast between the verse and the chorus.
The performing career grows wider
Dance with Me in 2005 continued the English-language album sequence. Later Dutch-language work, including Vrij and Nu, added another kind of address, while Bakkum also built a substantial musical-theatre career in productions such as Grease, Wicked and Flashdance.
The early singles capture a specific chapter within that wider history. Their charm depends on a straightforward relationship with the audience: the melody is easy to follow, the delivery is clear and the emotional scale is established without much delay. The later stage work gives those beginnings another context, showing a performer who would keep adapting the same practical skills of phrasing, timing and presentation to different kinds of song.
