Why we feature this artist
Kat DeLuna: a voice built for a moving track
Kat DeLuna’s early records are full of movement: quick percussion, bright electronic figures and a lead vocal that can rise above a very busy arrangement. Her pop draws on Caribbean and Latin dance rhythms without treating the chorus as an afterthought. The melody is still the part that brings everyone back together.
9 Lives
Born in New York and raised partly in the Dominican Republic, DeLuna brought more than one musical setting into her first major-label recordings. Epic released 9 Lives in 2007, with RedOne central to the production. The album gave her a sound which could be forceful and light on its feet at the same time.
Whine Up is the clearest introduction. The rhythm is already active before the voice begins to stretch across it, and the refrain gives the track an easy point of recognition. DeLuna can sing with considerable power, but the record depends just as much on the short, nimble phrases that keep it moving.
A brighter electronic frame
Inside Out followed, first reaching Belgium before its French release in 2011. Push Push brought a sharper electronic edge to the same dance-pop instincts. The textures change, while the relationship between a mobile beat and an assertive lead voice remains familiar.
There is a useful tension in the performances. A melody may want to soar, yet the arrangement keeps asking the singer to return to the beat. DeLuna handles those changes quickly, making a rhythmic line feel like part of the chorus’s preparation rather than a separate style exercise.
Energy with a centre
Her strongest early singles make room for a clear vocal identity inside production designed to fill the whole frequency range. Whine Up works because the competing elements have distinct jobs: percussion supplies the motion, the electronic parts sharpen the edges, and the voice provides a tune substantial enough to survive outside the mix.
