KC Da Rookee: an English voice in German hip-hop

KC Da Rookee occupies a useful crossing point in European hip-hop: an English-speaking rapper whose early recording career developed through the German scene. His delivery is firm and rhythmically mobile, with enough character to stand out in a group of voices and enough discipline to make a sparse track work.

The Showdown records

His debut album Rookeestizza appeared on Showdown in 1999. The label connection places the record within an active network of German production and collaboration, while the language and phrasing bring another perspective into that setting.

There is a practical musical benefit to that position. The voice does not need to imitate the surrounding scene to belong in it. A different accent, a particular way of cutting a line short, or a change in internal rhythm can become part of what the track is built around.

Emcee and Nexcalibur

The 2001 Showdown single Emcee was issued with Rook Translation, each available in vocal, instrumental and a cappella form. The format makes the priorities unusually clear: a beat and a vocal designed to hold attention separately as well as together.

Nexcalibur belongs to the next stage of that work. Its Four Fists collaboration includes Afrob, Samy Deluxe, D-Flame and DJ Desue in the recording credits. The meeting of different voices is central to the appeal, with the production providing a common rhythmic ground rather than making everyone sound alike.

A continuing conversation

The later Chosen project brought KC’s work back towards the UK while retaining a broad European production network. His career is useful evidence of how naturally hip-hop can travel through working relationships between scenes.

Emcee is the direct introduction in this catalogue. Hear the placement of the consonants, the controlled weight of the voice and the way a line finds its end inside the bar. The name of the track is a fairly exact description of what it offers.
