Why we feature this artist

Kelly Llorenna: the voice above the rush

Kelly Llorenna has the kind of voice that can make a fast dance record feel emotionally unhurried. The drums and keyboards may be racing underneath, but she gives a melody the shape of a complete thought. That balance links her work with N-Trance to the solo singles that followed.

Set You Free

Llorenna began working with N-Trance in the early 1990s. Set You Free became the defining meeting of her voice and the group’s rave-pop production: a piano figure opens the space, and the vocal gradually gives the track its human scale.

Her contribution is more substantial than a memorable line sampled into a club record. The performance has an arc. It can sound restrained at first, then become a full declaration as the arrangement rises around it. The song’s sense of release depends on that change.

The early-2000s singles

True Love Never Dies with Flip & Fill brought her into another successful dance partnership. In 2002, Tell It to My Heart placed her voice at the centre of a version of the Taylor Dayne song. The melody is already strong, and Llorenna sings it with the clarity needed to survive a much faster electronic setting.

Heart of Gold followed in the same year. Its release brought together versions from names including Breeze & Styles, Hixxy and Flip & Fill, showing how readily the vocal could move between related club styles. The words and melody keep their identity while the production changes the physical effect.

A complete performance

These records belong to a period when a single vocal could travel through radio edits, extended club mixes and harder remixes. Llorenna’s voice makes that movement possible because the performance carries its own momentum. The beat can be replaced, but the emotional rise of the song is already there in the singing.
