Why we feature this artist
The feeling held inside a fast beat
Lasgo’s early singles place vulnerable, direct vocal lines inside bright, rapidly moving dance production. The synth figure may be the first thing a listener recognises, but the voice gives the record its emotional reason to keep turning. The Belgian project belongs to a particularly melodic strand of the early-2000s club-pop crossover.
A clear introduction in Something
Producers Peter Luts and David Vervoort developed the original project with singer Evi Goffin. Something brought Lasgo into view in 2001, followed by other early songs including Alone and Pray. The music is built around a useful contrast: the beat is persistent and confident while the vocal can sound exposed or uncertain. A repeated electronic figure gives that feeling a stable place to sit.
Some Things gathered the first era into an album. The recordings make the relationship between a short pop song and an extended club arrangement especially easy to hear. The central melodic material is strong enough to survive repetition, while the changes in texture prepare each return of the chorus.
The project outlives its first setting
Far Away continued the catalogue with songs including Surrender and All Night Long. The sound remained recognisable, but the arrangements gave the vocal and instrumental hooks different kinds of space. A later phase with Jelle Van Dael and the involvement of Jef Martens led into Smile in 2009. The personnel changes matter because Lasgo is a continuing production project, rather than simply a fixed name for one singer. More recent artist material identifies Nikki Born as a later lead vocalist. The original releases remain the central point of reference. Hear them as songs as well as dance records: the small hesitation in a phrase, the clear shape of a melody and the way the instrumental lift answers the voice. Those details explain why the early singles still carry an emotional identity beyond the sound of their period.
Essential releases
Some Things
The first album gathers Something, Alone and Pray, establishing the contrast between an exposed lead voice and bright, firmly organised electronic production.
Far Away
Surrender and All Night Long extend the original sound, with the vocal and instrumental hooks occupying a slightly different balance within the arrangements.
Smile
The album introduces another phase of the project with Jelle Van Dael, giving useful context for how Lasgo’s musical identity continued through changes in its line-up.
