Why we feature this artist
Le Le: the joke has a very good beat
Le Le make electronic pop with a straight face and a raised eyebrow. The grooves are functional enough for a dance floor, while the voices, languages and small absurdities keep disturbing the surface. The humour works because the production is taken seriously.
Three different kinds of eye
The Dutch trio brings together vocalist Pepijn Lanen, known as Faberyayo, producer Rimer Veeman, known as Rimer London, and artist Pieter Janssen, known as Parra. Their different backgrounds are useful to the project: words, sound and visual character all contribute to the same deliberately peculiar world.
Early releases through Magnetron included La Bouche and Skinny Jeans in 2007. The music could move between English, Dutch, German and French, treating the sound and attitude of a phrase as part of its musical material. The changes of language give the records a playfulness which does not depend on every listener catching every detail.
Flage
The 2008 album Flage included Breakfast, International Pants, Sachen and La Bouche. The titles give a fair indication of the tone, but the tracks are more carefully arranged than a novelty description would suggest.
A dry vocal can make a repeated electronic figure seem funnier, while a serious groove can make a ridiculous line more effective. The songs depend on that balance. If the instrumental felt disposable, the humour would have much less room to work.
Keeping the machinery running
Partytime followed in 2012, with further releases including Flapped Sadly in Our Faces. The project’s identity remained broader than a single joke or a single hit.
Skinny Jeans is the entry point here: a compact electro-pop record in which the surface confidence and the underlying silliness are allowed to coexist. Le Le know that a track can make someone laugh and still give them a good reason to keep dancing.
