The story of Marco & Sita
Why we feature this artist
A Dutch duet designed to fill a large shared occasion
Lopen op het Water places Marco Borsato and Sita in a broad, melodic duet with an unusually public setting. Released across the 2001–2002 period, the song became associated with the Dutch royal wedding celebrations in February 2002. Its central idea is carried by the voices meeting, rather than by either singer taking possession of the whole recording.
The two voices give the melody its changing scale
Borsato brings a fuller, more established vocal weight, while Sita's lighter presence gives the exchange another shade. The arrangement leaves the melodic line easy to follow, allowing the singers to move from their own phrases toward passages that feel shared. The emotional rise is clear without requiring complicated changes in tempo or texture.
The title's suggestion of doing something impossible suits the song's expansive manner. Its refrain opens outward, and the production supports that gesture with a substantial pop-ballad setting. The performance is direct enough for a large audience to understand its mood almost immediately.
A recording and a stage performance
The original official video preserves the Marco Borsato and Sita credit, while Borsato's own archive also includes their live performance at De Kuip in 2002. Those versions show how readily the duet could move from a studio arrangement into a much larger communal space.
The record reached number one in the Dutch Top 40 during its original campaign. Its place in that particular period is part of its identity, but the musical exchange remains intelligible beyond the occasion. Two singers approach the same melody with different vocal colours, then let the refrain make them sound as though they have arrived at the same point together.
