The story of Matt Willis

Why we feature this artist

A short solo chapter with its own guitar sound

Matt Willis’s solo recordings occupy a specific space between Busted’s first split and the later return of the group. Don’t Let It Go to Waste is a single-album chapter, built around guitar-led pop-rock and a lead voice given a different role from the shared group setting. Its concise scale makes the individual songs the most useful way into the story.

Up All Night sets the first pace

Up All Night appeared in 2006 as the debut solo single. The recording gives Willis a direct introduction within a full band arrangement, with an outgoing chorus and the rhythmic weight of guitars and drums. Coming after Busted, the familiar appetite for a hook remains, but the performance has to establish one singer’s character through the entire song.

Hey Kid followed in the same year, adding another melodic shape to the early run. These singles are useful companions because the change between them happens within a clearly defined musical world. The songs do not need a new image for every release to make their differences audible.

The album completes the picture

Don’t Let It Go to Waste arrived in 2006, gathering those first songs alongside the title track and other material. The album gives the solo sound enough room to become more than a brief single between group events. There is a clear practical pleasure in this kind of guitar-pop writing: a verse establishes the movement, the instruments make a small opening and the refrain gives the voice a larger space. Willis’s later work would again include Busted, but that does not make the solo recordings interchangeable with the group catalogue. They document a particular decision to carry the lead alone, keeping the band’s physical energy while changing who has to hold the narrative. The title album remains the central reference point for that independent phase.
