The story of Mattafix
Why we feature this artist
A city song with several musical homes
Mattafix’s Big City Life has the immediate outline of a pop single and a musical atmosphere that is harder to reduce to one place. Marlon Roudette and Preetesh Hirji bring singing, rhythmic delivery and studio production into a shared setting. The songs move comfortably between reggae-informed ease, hip-hop phrasing and more reflective electronic textures.
Signs of a Struggle gives the partnership room
The debut album Signs of a Struggle arrived in 2005. Big City Life provides the obvious introduction, with a melodic refrain that remains clear while the surrounding rhythm keeps its own measured pace. The voice can sound conversational even as the song opens into a larger statement.
To & Fro and Passer By reveal other parts of the same record. The writing and production credits keep both musicians central to the project, making this a genuine duo rather than simply a singer performing over an anonymous instrumental backdrop. The arrangements let short phrases and repeated figures carry substantial atmosphere.
Rhythm & Hymns widens the perspective
The second album, Rhythm & Hymns in 2007, includes Living Darfur, Angel and Things Have Changed. These titles offer distinct routes through a record that extends the duo’s interest in melodic accessibility and a broader musical environment. The project’s two-album scale is useful to keep in view. It allows the development between records to be heard without inventing a much longer group history. Roudette’s later solo work, including Matter Fixed, belongs to a related but separate chapter. The Mattafix recordings preserve the specific interaction with Hirji and the production language they established together. Their identity rests on the way a song can sound direct while several rhythmic and melodic traditions remain present within it. Big City Life became the most familiar example, but the albums give that meeting a wider range of moods and subjects.
