Mauro Picotto: the hook, the pressure and the longer build
Mauro Picotto’s best-known records make a strong impression quickly. Komodo, Lizard and Iguana each have a sharply defined identity, but the Italian DJ and producer’s wider history also reaches into tougher, more gradual forms of techno. The relationship between those two scales is a useful way into his music.
A producer inside Italian dance music
Picotto developed through DJ work and the production environment around Media Records, with earlier recording activity under the R.A.F. name. His solo singles brought a distinctive combination of electronic hooks, firm rhythmic pressure and dramatic changes in texture.
Lizard and Iguana are especially clear examples of that period. The central sound can be recognisable almost at once, leaving the arrangement to change its surroundings: more pressure from the bass, a release in the percussion, or a passage where the main idea is allowed to hang in the air.
Komodo
Komodo reached the UK chart in 2000. Its melodic and vocal elements give it a different emotional colour from a track organised around a harder instrumental figure, while the rhythm remains direct enough to connect the two sides of Picotto’s catalogue.
The contrast is part of the interest. A producer associated with forceful electronic music can also make room for a more floating melodic feeling. The tension comes from allowing that atmosphere to exist above a beat that keeps its weight.
Alchemy and Meganite
Picotto’s later work developed around the Alchemy label and the Meganite club concept, introduced in 2003. That setting placed the longer movement of a DJ set and a wider techno vocabulary beside the earlier success of individual singles.
Komodo remains a clear first encounter. Following it with Lizard, Iguana and the later DJ work reveals a musician interested in both the instantly identifiable sound and the patient management of energy over a much longer passage.
